A songwriter's bible! This book is the real thing! This book is gold!
By dutchw48
I am very inspired to turn my poetry into songs, but I lack some of the basic song-crafting skills. I read a number of books with great titles but they were 99% fluff! I found Robin Frederick's "LEARN HOW TO WRITE A SONG: a step-by-step guide," on her website, robinfrederick.com, and it was FANTASTIC! I learned more on that website than I had from any of the books I had read! I advise you to visit her website, check out her "WRITE A SONG" guide and see for yourself. If you like what you see, you will want to have this book in your hands! BTW: You may not think your goal is to write a HIT, but what is a HIT? A HIT is a song that appeals to a lot of people. Who among us doesn't want to write songs that are appealing to others? Every "shortcut" in the book (except #1) has a "DO IT NOW" exercise associated with it to get you practicing the craft of songwriting immediately! If you want to be a songwriter (or a better songwriter) this is your book! I love it!

This book deserves 5 stars

If you want to get somewhere in the music world, BUY THIS BOOK. And do read it cover to cover. I struggled for years, with myself, and just as I started to "get it" this book explained exactly what those A&R people had been telling me for years, and are still telling me because I still have not got it right; but I'm a little bit closer me thinks and I've only been at it for about 5 years :)

This book will tell you how to be adaptive to the modern era. If you want to write your own way and just make (scratch?)a living then go ahead, but that's a very, very hard life. I am happy to bend some of my creations to the modern age, and it won't change you too much. I thought it would commercialize me too much and change "my creations" (how egotistical of me), to adapt myself to times as they change. The times have already a-changed Those songs you sing that you grew up with? They were hits back then and still would be now if written for the modern age.

Now after reading this book and ignoring and mentally being aghast by her A&R reviewers for years, I think I have finally figured out that the songs written now are just as good as the songs written in the past, they're just built differently - kinda-sorta. The question that's left - I hope - is can I adapt? And am I good enough to make the bar? I still don't know but I'm still trying because I think I might actually be getting better, albeit very, very slowly - and the slow part is mostly me unlearning what I know to replace it with something new.

People like David Bowie adapted and stayed on top. So did Phil Collins. And if you read this book and "get it", you'll even recognize differences between the songs of people like Rob Thomas in the 90's and his songs in more recent years. Carlos Santana said he worked with people like Rob Thomas and Michelle Branch because he wanted to be on the radio again. I want to be on the radio - what a freakin' buzz that would be. In the modern world, it's just a different way of doing things. And genres really are defined by really simple things like which chords you use and now I think it might be all about lyrics and there are no gaps for guitarists anymore, and it's much more difficult to sing because there isn't anywhere to breath and you don't have regular pauses to remember which words come next. And the bass is more prominent so good for bass players. Guitar lead has faded away in many ways, and sadly I might say, because for me there's nothing like the dual leads of Wishbone Ash, and of course many others :)

Such an awesome book and an awesome tool!
By Ralph Nunez
I am a newbie to song writing, however, I am a musician for quite a number of years. I never really 'tried' to seriously sit down and write a whole song. It just seemed out of reach and distant to me. I can write tons of music , just not lyrics! I don't know why it was always so out of reach for me to accomplish a whole finished song with lyrics. So, one day I decided- "I need to really learn how to do this and stop being so scared of doing it". Well, I strolled around Amazon until I found one that seemed simple, yet fun to work with.
I stumbled across THIS book by Robin A. Frederick and just started reading it. Wow - after just a few chapters I really began to understand what I had been doing wrong all along! I really needed this 'Guide' to direct me in the right way to just START. Buy this book and you will see what I mean. Totally easy to understand - layman's terms! If you really want to understand - You Will! A+++
