Mace has been a consultant to the Office of Technology Resources for the U.S. Congress and the Alzheimer Association, and was the coordinator of the Eleanor Price department of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Peter V. Rabins was the director of the Eleanor Price department of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

I should explain that we are a small family, my parents, my husband and me. I live in Israel, while my parents live in Mexico City so the book has been useful mainly to my mother. The book helps the family of the ailing parent to become aware of some of the emotional barriers which have to be surmounted when trying to help their dear ones. I cannot say that it has offered us a very different view from the one we have acquired by daily taking care of my father. My father's sickness hit us like a lightening on a cloudless day. During the last couple of year we have had some suspicions that my father, who is 84 years old, was getting sick. He did however try to cover up his problems and his handicaps, and we refrained from interfering until the beginning of last February when his condition has started to deteriorate so fast that we had hardly had time to get used to a one new symptom when another one appeared. My father has been diangnosed as suffering from Alzheimer with Lewy bodies which has manifested itself in impaired speech, loss of most of his executive capacity, inability to stand up without assistance,rigidity of muscles, inability to perceive distances. Taking care of him at home has become quite impossible and it seems that we will soon have to intern him in a nursing home. The book has indeed helped us to understand that sending my father to a nursing home does not mean being disloyal to him. Nevertheless it is very painful for us.
