About the Author
Although Robin always had aspired to become a great leader, he realized from his time at the United States Naval Academy and in the United States Marine Corps that leadership was much more than just telling people what to do: a great leader uses interpersonal skills to influence, rather than command, others. As a commander in charge of over 200 recruits and 16 drill instructors at Parris Island, South Carolina, Robin learned the fundamentals of leadership and influence. Upon entering service in the FBI in 1997, Robin began his journey as a behaviorist in the agency's efforts to thwart the effort of our country's adversaries. Throughout his life, Robin has received advanced training and experience in the area of social psychology and the practical application of the science behind relationship development. Robin's remarkable journey began as a 1992 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and former U. S. Marine Corps Officer. He has studied interpersonal relations for the past 27 years of his government service. Through observations of nonverbal behavior, use of the Personal Discernment Inventory, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, and his own unique techniques, Robin has built highly effective tools for all aspects and stages of interpersonal communication. Robin has combined all these tools and techniques and created a one-of-a-kind formula for success with people. Highly recommended book and easy-to-apply techniques

As a communications instructor, I continue to look for information to share with students that will help them become even more effective in their relationships at work, home, and with friends. This book has positively impacted my ability to begin conversations with anyone and to develop rapport with people in all levels of my organization, as well as those in my personal life. I find myself consciously implementing the techniques he recommends and sharing my own communication success stories with family and friends. Today, effective communication skills are a top priority in every field, and this book offers practical examples anyone can learn to apply. This is a must-read book that is easy to understand (great anecdotes!) and that will help you realize just how easy it is to establish and maintain connections with anyone.

A Perfect Workbook for all your communcations

I do not write many reviews for books but I felt compelled to write a review on this book. I have only known Robin for a short period of time but have learned so much from him. The team at social-engineer.org has had him on the podcast a few times and each time I have learned something new.
When he told me that he was going to write a book documenting his steps to building rapport I knew right away that this information would be valuable for social engineers, sales people, managers, every day people... heck any one that can read and has to interact with another human being.
I don't want to recap everything but let me give you some highlights to the book. Technique two is my favorite as it discusses using nonverbals. Robin's simple approach and key reminders makes this very complex topic easy to understand.
Probably the most important topic in the book (in my opinion) is Technique 5 - Ego Suspension. If this is the only point you walk away from after reading this book you would still be light years ahead of the masses.
Robin doesn't just give you the years of experience and life skills he has learned in those pages but he packed the book with 5 amazing practice exercises. Each of the exercises will challenge you to put the skills he taught you in the book to task. That makes this a work book for your communications. One that I am sure you will have dog-eared in no time.
Another valuable aspect to the book is that Robin gives you so many stories and not just the stories that make him look like a pro... but he actually goes into his failures. He uses them to teach us lessons on how to and how NOT to do each of the principles he discusses.
This book is not just a book for security professionals, it is not just a book for sales people - it is really a book for all people. If you are looking for a good read that will enhance your life this is the book you are looking for.

If you're looking for advanced socializing techniques, look elsewhere.

I am in sales, and I purchased this book in hopes that it would assist me with day to day encounters with prospects and customers. If you have similar reasons for buying this book, I'm sorry, but you should get something else.
All 10 of the techniques listed within this book are designed very well to bring someone who is socially inept into the real world. It is outlined like a workbook and clearly walks you through process initiating and keeping basic conversations, for absolutely nothing more than the sake of just having a good conversation. And unfortunately, that's where it stops.
Nothing about the FBI's techniques to persuade people. Not a word about techniques when there is a romantic interest in the target (the book specifically mentions that it steers clear of this topic). Nothing about closing deals, and very little in regards to general persuasion.
I am certainly going to give this book to an introverted friend of mine because this book is quite thorough and he has zero social skills.
My advice is to consider what your trying to learn before you buy this book, because beyond the basics, this book doesn't offer very much considering how the author boasts about being in charge of the "Federal Bureau of Investigation's elite counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program".
If you are looking for a book that will teach you how to further your agenda within a conversation, I highly recommend "Influence" by Dr. Robert B. Cialdini.
